Sacred Heart Caterham Vintage Afternoon Tea

On the 30th April and for the third year in a row, the parish of Sacred Heart hosted a vintage cream tea to raise money for the Connect2 El Salvador. The church hall was decked out to look like a traditional tea shop and over 50 people attended – so many that two sittings were organised. All enjoyed the afternoon tea, where tiered cake stands groaned under traditional English tea treats, from cucumber sandwiches to homemade cakes to scones with clotted cream and jam.

Tickets were sold at £8 for adults and £4 for children, meaning over £530 was raised. The money will go the community of Puentecitos, a town in western El Salvador, which Sacred Heart supports as part of CAFOD’s Connect2 scheme, which links parishes in the UK with communities overseas. All funds will be used to support villagers in Puentecitos open small businesses, run women’s groups and utilise organic farming methods.

Mary Tomlin, who helped to organise the event, said:“It’s always a nice community event, where the whole parish comes together and has a good time. The young people helped serve the tea and lots of parishioners baked cakes, making it a real community occasion.”

Many thanks to Mary Tomlin and the rest of the organisers at Sacred Heart for all of their support for CAFOD. It sounded like a wonderful event and we really appreciate the generosity and support of the parishioners..
