Building Together – Haiti, a year after the earthquake

In the aftermath of the earthquake, CAFOD launched its Haiti Earthquake Appeal. Thanks to the supporter’s amazing generosity, we’ve been able to raise more than £5.3 million to respond to the emergency. This money has helped to provide: tents and shelters to thousands of people, kitchen kits with pots, pans and cooking utensils, shower blocks, latrines and hygiene kits in camps (vital for preventing the spread of disease), a safe water supply for more than 40,000 people, medical supplies for families at risk of cholera, and health education, preparation for future emergencies through education, training and practical support and permanent homes that are resistant to earthquakes and hurricanes.

The situation on the ground remains extremely challenging but CAFOD will stay in Haiti for the long term, working through its Catholic partners to respond to the ongoing needs of the Haitian people. To find out more more about the work that is being done please go to the CAFOD website where you will find plenty of resources, including a 15 minute video film of one of the projects that CAFOD has funded with some explanatory text (link below). There is also a Caritas DVD entitled ‘Building Together – Haiti, a year after the earthquake’ available from the local CAFOD A&B office, please contact us on 01483 898866 should you like a copy.
